[eng] The economy of the Balearic Islands has experienced a strong growth at the beginning of
its rapid expansion. However, this growth is not exempt of negative repercussions during
its life cycle. This paper reviews the most recent tourism booms and historical events in
the Balearic Islands and makes special mention of the long-term disadvantages that
communities with high tourism specialization may experience in their economy from the
main economic indicators.
In this way, the slowdown in economic growth, the loss of productivity of the tourism
model and the low human capital endowment are emphasized through the temporal
analysis of statistical data accompanied by a theoretical framework.
