El efecto del riesgo geopolítico sobre el turismo en Israel

[spa] En este estudio se investiga el efecto del riesgo geopolítico sobre el turismo en Israel. Se utiliza un análisis de regresión entre las llegadas turísticas a Israel y el índice del riesgo geopolítico (GPR) de Caldara & Iacoviello (2019) y dos variables de control, el índice de volatilidad del mercado de acciones de EE.UU. y el precio del petróleo WTI. El GPR consiste en la búsqueda automatizada en los 11 periódicos más importantes del mundo artículos relacionados con la inestabilidad geopolítica en los diferentes países del mundo. Se verifica que el efecto del índice de riesgo geopolítico sobre Israel es negativamente significativo, pero va disminuyendo a lo largo del tiempo. Los resultados obtenidos suponen que la causa de que el GPR sea tan alto son los atentados terroristas y no la inestabilidad política. Esto conlleva caídas en las llegadas turísticas, pero gracias a que Israel cuenta con un gobierno sólido y con un gran nivel de desarrollo humano, al poco tiempo recupera la tendencia de crecimiento en las llegadas turísticas.

[eng] In this study, we investigate the effect of geopolitical risk on tourism in Israel. We apply a regression analysis between tourist arrivals in Israel and the geopolitical risk index (GPR) of Caldara & Iacoviello (2019) together with two control variables, the US equity market volatility index and the WTI oil price. The GPR consists of an automated search in the 11 most important newspapers in the world for articles related to geopolitical instability in the different countries in the world. We find that the effect of the geopolitical risk index on Israel is negatively significant, but it is decreasing over time. Our results imply that the cause of the GPR being so high is due to terrorist attacks and not to political instability. Terrorist attacks decrease tourist arrivals, but the latter soon recover the growth trend because of the strong government and high level of human development of Israel.
