Tourism sector and economic grouth: the case of Spain

Abstract

[eng] This study is focused on analysing to what extend tourism is an important factor from a macroeconomic point of view for the Spanish economy. Thus, the following aspects will be considered: the number of tourist arrivals and their expenditure, macroeconomic data like its contribution to the national gross domestic product (GDP), how it has evolved from the beginning of the 21st century until 2020, and also how it is related to the employment data and its evolution. Within this analysis, we will also go over and compare the last two crisis that the country has suffered: the current Covid-19 pandemic and the economic crisis of 2008. Finally, the methodology of Ivanov and Webster for measuring the contribution of tourism to an economy’s growth will be tested with data for Spain.

[spa] Este estudio se centra en analizar en qué medida el turismo es un factor importante desde el punto de vista macroeconómico para la economía española. Así, se considerarán los siguientes aspectos: el número de llegadas de turistas y su gasto, y datos macroeconómicos como su contribución al producto interior bruto (PIB) nacional y cómo ha evolucionado desde principios del siglo XXI hasta 2020, y también cómo se relaciona con los datos de empleo y su evolución. Dentro de este análisis, también se analizarán y compararán las dos últimas crisis que ha sufrido el país: la actual Covid-19 y la crisis económica de 2008. Finalmente, se examinará la metodología de Ivanov y Webster para medir la contribución del turismo al crecimiento económico con datos de España.
