The economic evolution of the spanish tourism sector

Abstract

[eng] The aim of this research is to analyse the economic evolution of the Spanish tourism sector from its beginnings until it became one of the main leaders in terms of inbound tourism, both in terms of the number of foreign visitors and their spending. We will develop the evolution from the 19th century to the present day, briefly commenting on the impact that the pandemic caused by COVID-19 is having on the sector in Spain. The study is structured by periods and includes a historical context to situate itself temporally. This context is related to the main economic magnitudes that are closely linked to the tourism sector. We will see the close relationship between tourism and the national balance of payments and how the processes of internationalisation, opening up to the outside world and globalisation have had a very positive effect on the sector.

[spa] El objeto de este trabajo es el análisis de la evolución económica que experimentó el sector turístico español, desde sus inicios hasta convertirse en una de las principales potencias en términos de turismo receptor, tanto a nivel de número de visitantes extranjeros como a nivel del gasto que éstos mismos realizan. Desarrollaremos la evolución partiendo del S.XIX hasta la época actual; comentando brevemente el impacto que está teniendo en el sector la pandemia originada por la COVID-19 en España. El estudio se estructura por periodos e incluye un contexto histórico para situarse temporalmente. Se relaciona esa coyuntura con las principales magnitudes económicas que se ven estrechamente ligadas con el sector turístico. Veremos la estrecha relación del turismo con la balanza de pagos nacional y cómo afectaron de manera muy positiva en el sector los procesos de internacionalización, apertura hacia el exterior y globalización.
