Heteropatriarchy, cisheteronormativity and gender discourses in Disney songs: deconstruction and revision

[eng] Being Disney one of the world’s largest entertainment and ideological state apparatuses —in the Althusserian sense— aimed at children, it is no wonder that the youngest in most countries grow up watching the cultural products this company creates, since the American film industry is also the most extensive and influential. Therefore, it is important to analyse the messages that are included in such audiovisual products, since the younger audience can internalise connotative messages. Thus, this paper examines the lyrics of the best-known songs from three films: “Poor unfortunate souls” from The Little Mermaid (1989), “I’ll make a man out of you” from Mulan (1998) and “Let it go” from Frozen (2013), to prove how the heteropatriarchal discourse is gradually set aside though it affects the representation of the protagonist women. The analysis will be structured in three different but interrelated motifs within these motion pictures: the importance of the voice, the relevance of the body, and the search for ‘true love’. This project explores how these films perpetuate or break free from sexist discourses created by heterosexual cis gendered white European men, thus creating room for much more open feminist, queer, and gender-dissident prespectives. This frame of reference, in line with the study of other gender identities beyond the normative binary —woman and man-– and the current academic interest on gender, queer and LGBTQ+ studies, will enlight this reserach work through a series of queer close re-readings of these films, since some characters present orientations, identities and performativities that differ from the cisheteronormative discourse. This purposely chosen feminist and queer approach opens the door to new, more diverse and critical interpretations of the films so that anyone who identifies with the female gender, with a binary gender but with sexual preferences other than heterosexual, or as queer, can identify with these characters and take them as examples not to feel alienated from reality. In addition, since children are the target audience of these films, these research exercises of re-signification empower those children who may feel rejected by traditional stories and approaches. This work also proves that, although society has gradually changed its way of thinking, there is still a long way to go and a lot to fight for so that humankind can all live together in harmony without any prejudice regarding gender and sexual identities.

[cat] Sent Disney un dels aparells estatals ideològics i d’entreteniment més grans del món —en el sentit althusserià— adreçat als nens, no és estrany que els més joves de la majoria de països creixin veient els productes culturals que crea aquesta empresa, ja que la indústria cinematogràfica americana és també la més extensa i influent. Per tant, és important analitzar els missatges que s’inclouen en aquests productes audiovisuals, atès que el públic més jove pot interioritzar missatges connotatius. Així, aquest treball estudia les lletres de les cançons més conegudes de tres pel·lícules: “Poor unfortunate souls” de La Sireneta (1989), “I'll make a man out of you” de Mulan (1998) i “Let it go” de Frozen (2013), per demostrar com el discurs heteropatriarcal es va deixant de banda, tot i que afecta la representació de les dones protagonistes. L’anàlisi s’estructurarà en tres motius diferents però interrelacionats dins d’aquestes pel·lícules: la importància de la veu, la rellevància del cos i la recerca de l’amor veritable. Aquest projecte explora com aquestes pel·lícules perpetuen o s’alliberen dels discursos sexistes creats per homes europeus, blancs i cisheterosexuals, creant així espai per a perspectives feministes, queer i dissidents de gènere molt més obertes. Aquest marc de referència, en línia amb l’estudi d’altres identitats de gènere més enllà del binari normatiu —dona i home— i l’interès acadèmic actual pels estudis de gènere, queer i LGBTQ+, il·luminarà aquest treball de recerca a través d’una sèrie de relectures queer d’aquestes pel·lícules, puix que alguns personatges presenten orientacions, identitats i performativitats diferents del discurs cisheteronormatiu. Aquest enfocament feminista i queer escollit a propòsit obre la porta a interpretacions noves, més diverses i crítiques de les pel·lícules perquè qualsevol persona que s’identifiqui amb el gènere femení, amb un gènere binari però amb preferències sexuals diferents de l’heterosexual, o com queer, pugui identificar-se amb aquests personatges i prendre’ls com a exemples per no sentir-se alienat de la realitat. A més, com que els nens són el públic objectiu d’aquestes pel·lícules, aquests exercicis de recerca de resignificació apoderen aquells nens que poden sentir-se rebutjats per les històries i els plantejaments tradicionals. Aquest treball també demostra que, tot i que la societat ha anat canviant progressivament la seva manera de pensar, encara queda molt camí per recórrer i molt per lluitar perquè la humanitat pugui conviure en harmonia sense cap prejudici pel que fa a les identitats sexuals i de gènere.
