El saxofón en la música tradicional de Galicia

Abstract

[spa] El saxofón llega a Galicia en el año 1851. En las últimas décadas del siglo XIX, este instrumento se integra en las bandas de música populares gallegas, que en ese momento estaban experimentando un enorme auge. En las primeras décadas del siglo XX, el saxofón entra en contacto directo con la música tradicional gallega gracias al nacimiento de las murgas, un tipo de agrupación con una doble raíz: las bandas de música y los grupos tradicionales. En este trabajo de investigación, titulado El saxofón en la música tradicional de Galicia, hemos estudiado la relación entre el saxofón y la música tradicional gallega. Tras situar el momento histórico en el que ambos elementos coinciden, hemos analizado su desarrollo hasta la actualidad. Se han aportado datos inéditos mediante la recopilación de testimonios y el análisis de grabaciones sonoras, que nos han servido como base para plantear una serie de reflexiones sobre conceptos como el de tradición. También se han tratado temas complementarios como el análisis de los músicos que tocaron por primera vez el saxofón en Galicia y sus características interpretativas, la relación entre la gaita y el saxofón, o las modificaciones organológicas provocadas por el contacto entre la música tradicional gallega y el invento de A. Sax. En definitiva, hemos estudiado el saxofón y la música tradicional gallega desde múltiples perspectivas para poder lograr una visión general de su desarrollo conjunto: una interacción a la que hemos decidido denominar simbiosis musical.

[eng] The saxophone arrived in Galicia in 1851. In the last decades of the 19th century, this instrument was integrated into the Galician popular wind bands, which at that time were experiencing a huge boom. In the first decades of the 20th century, the saxophone came into direct contact with Galician traditional music thanks to the birth of the murgas, a type of group with double roots: wind bands and traditional groups. In this research work, entitled The saxophone in traditional Galician music, we have studied the relationship between the saxophone and Galician traditional music. After situating the historical moment in which both elements coincide, we have analysed their development up to the present day. Unpublished data have been provided through the collection of testimonies and the analysis of sound recordings, which have served as a basis for a series of reflections on concepts such as tradition. We have also dealt with complementary subjects such as the analysis of the musicians who first played the saxophone in Galicia and their interpretative characteristics, the relationship between the bagpipe and the saxophone, or the organological modifications caused by the contact between traditional Galician music and the invention of A. Sax. In short, we have studied the saxophone and traditional Galician music from multiple perspectives in order to achieve a general and broad view of their joint development: an interaction which we have decided to call musical symbiosis.
