Gender biases in dishonesty

Abstract

[eng] The purpose of this paper is to analyze gender differences in dishonest behavior by analyzing the concept of dishonesty, the reason why people engage in dishonest behavior, some mechanisms that affect people’s behavior and also some ways to detect dishonesty. In this work two experiments are used, the first without incentives and the second with. Participants are asked to roll a die and report the result in private. In the first experiment where there are no incentives according to the number reported, we find no evidence of lying and the behavior of both genders is similar. In the second experiment, when the payment of a sum of money related to the number reported is added, we do see dishonesty in the answers obtained from both men and women.

[spa] El propósito de este artículo es analizar las diferencias de género en el comportamiento deshonesto analizando el concepto de deshonestidad, el por qué las personas se involucran en comportamientos deshonestos, algunos mecanismos que afectan el comportamiento de las personas y también algunas formas de detectar la deshonestidad. En este trabajo se usan dos experimentos, el primero sin incentivos y el segundo con. Los participantes deben tirar un dado y reportar el resultado en privado. En el primer experimento donde no existen incentivos según el número reportado, no encontramos indicios de mentiras y el comportamiento de los dos géneros es similar. En el segundo experimento, cuando se añade el pago de una suma de dinero relacionada con el número que se reporta, si que vemos deshonestidad en las respuestas obtenidas tanto en hombres como mujeres.
