El Foro de Trajano: la emulación y superación del Foro de Augusto

Abstract

[spa] El presente trabajo realiza un análisis sobre la autopromoción y la proyección de la imagen pública del emperador Trajano, a través de la construcción de su foro en Roma. Al promocionar el mayor foro conocido de Roma, Trajano tuvo siempre presente el precedente levantado por Augusto. Se trata de esclarecer a partir de qué medios Trajano trató de convertirse en el emperador más reconocido y recordado del imperio, e intentó emular y superar a la figura de Octavio Augusto en sus diversas facetas. Para intentar corroborar esta afirmación, se han valorado ambos conjuntos desde el punto de vista arquitectónico, material y escultórico. Trajano consiguió sus objetivos utilizando recursos diferentes a los de Augusto, como la monumentalidad del conjunto, la calidad y diversidad de los materiales, y la utilización constante de su retrato.

[eng] The current essay attends to analyse Trajan’s public figure and self promotion through the building of the Roman Forum. Based on this, the emperor took into account Augustus’ previous construction of his own forum. The present work focuses on highlighting the attempts of Trajan to become the most celebrated and remembered governor of the Roman Empire, by means of imitating and exceeding Augustus in all his facets. In this way, the investigation carried on studies of both buildings from the architectural, material and sculptural perspective, to show that Trajan’s political project intended to outdo his predecessor’s. Trajan accomplished his objectives through the usage of several different resources than those Augustus did, such as the monumental character of the ensemble, the quality and diversity of the materials, as well as the continuous use of his portraitures.
