English Teaching to Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students in Majorca: A Qualitative Analysis

Abstract

[eng] Learning English is thought to be a challenging task for deaf and hard of hearing students. The difficulties they encounter are mainly attributed to their hearing loss, but more attention needs to be paid to the methodologies and approaches that are used to teach them this language. Accordingly, this paper aims to present a qualitative analysis of the English learning process of these students on the island of Majorca, where no previous research on the issue has been conducted. Owing to their large number of English speakers, the United States and the United Kingdom have been taken as a frame of reference to explore the most common approaches to teach this language. This theoretical framework constitutes the starting point for the analysis of the informants’ viewpoints on the matter, which reveal that the way English is taught to deaf and hard of hearing students needs to be changed.

[cat] Es considera que aprendre anglès és una tasca complexa per a l’alumnat sord o amb discapacitat auditiva. Les dificultats amb les quals es troben s’atribueixen principalment al seu dèficit auditiu, però s’hauria de prestar més atenció a les metodologies i enfocaments que es fan servir per ensenyar-los aquesta llengua. Per aquest motiu, el present treball pretén oferir una anàlisi qualitativa del procés d’aprenentatge de l’anglès d’aquests alumnes a l’illa de Mallorca, on no s’ha fet cap investigació prèvia al respecte. Degut al seu elevat nombre de parlants d’anglès, s’ha escollit els Estats Units i el Regne Unit com a marc de referència per a explorar quins són els enfocaments més comuns per a ensenyar l’anglès. Aquest marc teòric constitueix el punt de partida per a l’anàlisi de l’opinió dels informants sobre el tema, els quals afirmen que s’ha de canviar la manera en què s’ensenya l’anglès a les persones sordes o amb dèficit auditiu.
