Translating humor and profanity in US series Breaking Bad

Abstract

[eng] This dissertation examines the use of the translation technique known as “neutralization” in the US series Breaking Bad. The number of humoristic situations as well as the use of vulgar expressions used in the marginal and criminal environments where the plot takes place proves to be quite challenging for translation. Through the analysis of different examples from chapters of the five seasons of this series said that are characterized by humor and profanity, this study demonstrates that neutralizations are frequently used while not being the proper technique to use in these contexts. It argues that many nuances and details are lost in the translation of the TT because neutralizations tend to leave these nuances in order to stick to the main message of the ST.
