Lamuerte invisible : las enfermedades en los navíos de los siblos XVI y XVII

Abstract

[spa] Este trabajo pretende exponer las condiciones sanitarias de los navíos que se adentraban en alta mar en los siglos XVI y XVII. Se exploran las enfermedades más comunes que afectaron a la tripulación y a los pasajeros, así como aquellos factores que contribuyeron a su propagación y los tratamientos médicos disponibles en ese periodo. También se analizan los impactos que tuvieron dichas patologías en los navíos que las sufrieron, en un entorno tan inhóspito como el mar. Se destacan varios casos históricos en los que se atestiguan los estragos causados por estas dolencias y los retos que hubieron de superar los individuos presentes en dichos barcos durante toda la Edad Moderna

[eng] This essay aims to expose the sanitary conditions of the ships that entered the high seas in the 16th and 17th centuries. The most common diseases that affected the crew and passengers are explored, as well as those factors that contributed to their spread and the medical treatments available during that period. The impacts that these pathologies had on the ships that suffered them in an environment as inhospitable as the sea, are also analyzed. Several historical cases stand out in which the havoc caused by these ailments and the challenges that the individuals present on these ships had to overcome throughout the Modern Age are attested
