Los funerales de Pío IX: liturgia, arte efímero y contexto institucional en Mallorca (1878)

Abstract

[eng] The news of the death of the Pope Pius IX caused in Majorca a great organized deployment to honour the Supreme Pontiff with exceptional funeral services, not just in the Cathedral, but also in all the parishes, especially in Alaró's. Burial mounds, inscriptions in biblical sense and the temple adornment were indispensable elements in those crowded Requiem masses and, nowadays, they are also essential to understand the liturgy and ephemeral art as a part of the intangible heritage, just when the awareness of the need to preserve artistic heritage would lead to the creation of the Lullian Archaeological Society.
