[eng] The first evidence of a certain interest in folk literature in the Balearic Islands dates
to the eighteenth century in Menorca. The island was under British rule from 1713
to 1756 and from 1763 to 1802, and under French rule from 1756 to 1763. The
British Crown kept Catalan as the primary language and promoted a system of
government that was more liberal than the one becoming established in Bourbon
Spain. In this sociopolitical context, Menorca experienced a period of economic
prosperity and developed a cultural environment that fully embraced the principles
of the Enlightenment and Neoclassicism. |
