dc.description.abstract [eng] This study aims to enhance comprehension of the current behavior of domestic tourists in Spain. To accomplish this objective, we developed an origin–destination matrix covering all interregional trips made in Spain between 2015 and 2022. The panel model was estimated using random effects with an autoregressive component. This model specification yields significant insights. The dynamic component reveals a temporal correlation between past reservations and current excursions, demonstrating how previous travel behavior influences present trips. Furthermore, national tourists perceive tourism as a normal good, in contrast to international demand. Moreover, qualitative aspects such as the existence of World Heritage Sites and rural regions indicate the presence of supplementary tourism activities beyond sun and sea leisure. Additionally, the size of the population also emerges as a crucial element. Regions with high population densities represent considerable potential demand. To conclude, we examine the plausible influence of strategic governmental investments in endorsing lesser-known areas for domestic tourism. en
